ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The 2013 University of New Mexico Baseball Alumni Weekend was a great success as former letterwinners spanning five decades came back to Albuquerque to meet with fellow Lobos.

The weekend began with a social Thursday at Uptown Sports Bar & Grill as Lobos. The golf tournament on Friday featured a close competition as Clark Langdon and Mark Scanlon won the title ahead of the second-place team of DJ Peterson and Gera Sanchez.

Friday night baseball letterwinners got to meet letterwinners from other sports, including former NFL lineman Robin Cole, at the Homecoming Social in the End Zone Club in the Tow Diehm Athletic Complex.

The big event came Saturday morning at Lobo Field as the annual Alumni Game was held. The alumni had a chance to meet and talk to the current team while taking infield and batting practice. Immediately before the game head coach Ray Birmingham held a special presentation at home plate in which he unveiled a plaque dedicated to the memory of Tom Dunn.

Mr. Dunn played three seasons for the Lobos and was a member of the 1962 Skyline Championship team. His most important contribution, however, may have been his work to help save the program in the late ‘80s. He helped lead a fundraising effort after the UNM athletic department was forced to eliminate baseball due to budget cuts. His efforts, along with those of several individuals like Ernie Blackstone and David Hunt, saved the program and ensured that future Lobos would be able to wear the Cherry and Silver on Lobo Field for UNM.

As for the game itself, the six-inning matchup was a close affair. In the end, though, Silver won a one-run game with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning. After four the score was tied at one. In the top of the fifth, Cherry struck for three to take a 4-1 lead. Silver struck right back, however, and scored four in the bottom of the frame. They then held Cherry off the board in the top of the sixth to come out victorious.

The weekend ended during the Homecoming football game versus UNLV when the 1985 team, which still holds the school record for wins in a season with 42, was honored at halftime.
