ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The University of New Mexico’s women’s tennis team had a successful first day at the 2013 USTA/ITA Women’s Tennis Mountain Regionals as they completed the day with a 3-0 record.
Dominique Dulski and Natasha Smith represented the Lobos in the 128 Draw Singles bracket. Both athletes came out with the victory over their opponents and will advance to the second round of play on Thursday morning.
Lizette Blankers and Michaela Bezdickova both received a bye for the first round of singles play, but will begin competing in the singles category on Thursday.
“We had a pretty solid day overall”, said head coach Erica Jasper. “We definitely battled with some nerves at times but we did a nice job overcoming it and playing our brand of tennis.”
Blankers and Bezdicokva will also be competing in the second round of the 64 Draw Doubles bracket after winning their first round match. The UNM duo defeated the University of Northern Colorado’s Chrissie Hoolahan and Laura Wehner, 8-4.
“We have some very tough matches on deck tomorrow, so we’ll have to be a little more disciplined and determined,” Jasper said.
Regional play will start up again on Thursday at 9:00 a.m. (PST)
Full results will be posted on itatennis.com and golobos.com at the end of each day.
