Head Coach Jeremy Fishbein and the Lobos are back to the friendly confines of the UNM Soccer Complex after a 1-0 win at ranked Tulsa on Wednesday evening. The Lobos took down Tulsa courtesy of a Niko Hansen goal from James Rogers in the second half. The win kept New Mexico undefeated on the road (4-0-1) and in conference play (2-0-1). They welcome the Florida International Panthers on Saturday evening. FIU is coming off a convincing 4-0 win versus Marshall for their first C-USA win.
Hansen’s Stellar Freshman Campaign
Freshman Niko Hansen continues the fast start to his collegiate career. The Californian has six goals through his first eleven matches as a Lobo. Hansen is now fourth in the New Mexico freshman scoring list behind Justin Sells (14 g), Ben Ashwill (12 g) and Ben McKendry (7 g).
A Top the Conference Standings
Wednesday evening’s win at Tulsa also puts New Mexico in a tie with UAB for the best Conference USA record. The Lobos and Blazers are both 2-0-1 in C-USA play.
A First Impression
The shutout win of Tulsa came as redshirt freshman defender Chris Gurule made his first career start. He was part of a backline that scored the clean sheet for UNM, and Gurule made one of the pair of team saves.
Relentless Pressure Paying Off
Coach Fishbein and the Lobos pride themselves in their fast-paced, attacking offensive style. The Cherry & Silver continually out-shoot their opponents. To this point in the season, New Mexico is averaging an eight-shot advantage over their opponents per match.
Wednesday’s shutout was the second consecutive clean sheet for Coach Fishbein and the Lobos. Goalkeeper Michael Lisch now has five shutouts on the season with a scoreless streak of 306 minutes still intact.
