ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Lobos Michaela Bezdickova and Lizette Blankers are advancing to the next round of the doubles draw after their success on day one of the 2013 Clay Collegiate Invite in Orlando, Fla.
Bezdickova and Blankers are the only University of New Mexico competitors still in the running for a tournament title. The duo defeated USTA’s Betsy Kingsley and Jessie Aney on Wednesday afternoon, 8-4. They will be competing in the doubles round of 16 against Florida State’s Danelka Borthwick and Kerrie Cartwright on Thursday.
“Misa and Lizette probably had one of their best doubles matches to date coming back from 1-4 down,” head coach Erica Jasper said. “Those two are really starting to understand their brand of doubles, which is exciting to see.”
Emily Olivier and Natasha Smith unfortunately came up short in their doubles match losing to Central Florida’s Josephine Haraldson and Caroline Eberhart, 8-3.
The Lobos also struggled in the singles category on day one. Bezdickova and Blankers advanced to the second round, but couldn’t pull off the win. Olivier and Smith both lost in the first round. All four competitors will continue to play in the consolation bracket.
“Results wise it was a tough first day,” Jasper said. “However, I was very happy overall with how we competed and the level at which we played.”
Friday’s competition will be at the Grand Cypress courts. There will be two rounds of main draws singles, one round of consolation singles, and one round of main draw doubles.
Results from the invite will be updated throughout the weekend on the main page of women’s tennis on Seminoles.com. Full UNM results will also be posted at the end of each day on golobos.com.
“I think all four players learned something today; hopefully we can take today’s experiences and be a little better tomorrow,” Jasper said.
