ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- The University of New Mexico women’s tennis program is still in the running for the doubles championship title as Michaela Bezdickova and Lizette Blankers pick up another victory on day two of the Clay Collegiate Invite.
The UNM duo is advancing to the quarterfinals round of the doubles bracket after they defeated Florida State’s Danelka Borthwick and Kerrie Cartwright on Friday afternoon, 8-3. They will face Georgina Sellyn and Frances Altick of Vanderbilt on Saturday.
“Misa and Lizette had another very solid performance in doubles,” head coach Erica Jasper said. “They are starting to work very well together and play very well together. They will have another tough match tomorrow, so they’ll have to be that much better.”
Lobos Emily Olivier and Natasha Smith will begin competing in doubles consolation play on Saturday at 5:00 p.m. (EST).
UNM did not see a lot of success in singles consolation play as they 0-3 on Friday morning.
“We definitely had a tough day in singles. I thought at times everybody played well, but across the board we are still having trouble sustaining a high level throughout an entire match,” Jasper said. “We’ll definitely continue to put work in that area next week to try to be a bit better in singles in our final event.”
The 2013 Clay Collegiate Invite will resume on Saturday, Oct. 26 at 8:30 a.m. (EST).
