Lobos fall to Northern Arizona

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The University of New Mexico swimming and diving team traveled to Northern Arizona University this weekend to participate in their very first meet of the season. The Lobo athletes were finally able to officially compete after a hectic start of the season and prove their strength in several events on Saturday. 

Although the Lumberjacks ultimately took the meet with a total score of 166.5, 35 points over the Lobos who totaled 131.5 points, New Mexico was still dominant in 6 out of 16 events.

The Lobos started off the meet on a high note taking first in the 200-meter medley relay. The team of Kaela McKee, Ashley Blanchette, Jorgi Hobson, and Fanni Pataki finished first with a time of 1:57.63. New Mexico also came in second with the team of Amber Amr, Kristin Walker, Samantha Moss, and Shayla King coming in 2.02 seconds after Hobson and company with a time of 1:59.65.  

Freshman newcomer McKee added to more first place finishes for the Lobos. She took first in the 100-and 200-meter backstroke with times of 1:02.80 and 2:19.93, respectively.  

Pataki, King, and April Chee dominated the 50-meter freestyle for New Mexico. They swept first through third with times of 6.72, 27.14, and 27.34 respectively.  Pataki showed her competitiveness taking first a second time in the 100-meter free with a time of 58.96.

Senior diver Megan Harper placed second and third off the springboard events. Her scores of 292.72 put her in second off the 1-meter board and 243.30 off the 3-meter placed her third.

The Lobos prevailed over the Lumberjacks in the final event of the meet taking first and second in the 400-meter free relay. Pataki, McKee, Anna Lilliestrom were first clocking in at 3:57.94 while Chee, Hobson, King, and Sarah Weihe were second with a time of 3:59.70.

The meet provided the Lobos experience and allowed the team to prepare for its next meet which is quickly approaching.

New Mexico will host Northern Colorado this Thursday, on Halloween, at 5 p.m. at Seidler Natatorium.
