New Mexico 0, Utah State 0 (2OT – Utah State advances 4-2 on Penalty kicks) (Match Report)

Albuquerque, N.M. – There usually is nothing overly satisfying with a tie.  That is especially so when you don’t win the penalty kick shootout afterwards.  Utah State came back from a 2-1 deficit in penalty kicks to end New Mexico’s season in a 4-2 penalty kick shootout after a 0-0 draw through double overtime.

The Lobos, the No. 4 seed in the tournament, saw its season end at 8-10-3, while moved to 10-6-5 and lives on to face No. 1 San Diego State in the semifinals on Thursday at 7 p.m.

After Utah State and New Mexico played to a scoreless draw just 12 days earlier, the two teams once again played to a scoreless stalemate.  Utah State’s best chance came early in the game when Lexie Morgan’s long shot was deflected by Cassie Ulrich off the crossbar and out of harm’s way, while Brianna Webster had a header of a corner kick hit the post late in regulation, only to have in bound over the end line.

In the shootout, Jennifer Flynn scored first for Utah State, and Elba Holguin matched in for UNM.  Jayne Robinson then was stoned by Ulrich who dove to her right for the stop, and Dylann O’Connor hit for New Mexico, giving the Lobos a 2-1 lead after two rounds, but everything changed after that.

Utah State coach Heather Cairns sent up Jamie Duke, who didn’t play in the match, and despite sitting on the bench for two and a half hours in the freezing cold, she calmy evened everything at 2-2 with a goal, and then UNM’s Lindsay Guice tried to go up the middle, but keeper Natalie Stoval never moved, so it was tied at 2-2 after three rounds.

Sara Lorscheider hit Utah State, and then Alexis Leyba hit one to Stoval’s right, but this time the keeper had to make an athletic stop, pouncing on the low-liner.  That set the stage for Ambryn McCallson to end it.  McCallson, who had the game-winner in the first round against Nevada, hammered a shot past Ulrich to clinch the match.

Quotes from Kit Vela:
I thought we played hard and well and did the right things. We just couldn't get the ball in the net during the regular game. PK's are tough when you win and tough when you lose. It's unfortunate.

Notes
*Cassie Ulrich picked up her ninth shutout, tying for fifth-most in a single season.  The nine already put her seventh on the UNM career list.  Her 0.85 goals against average was the seventh-best single season mark in school history, and her 87 saves was 10th-best.
*Liz Nare broke the all-time career minutes played record at New Mexico with 7,774, and she tied Kelli Cornell’s school record with her 82nd game played and 82nd start.  Brooke Ellison moved into a tie for sixth with 79 games played, into a tie for eighth with 74 games started, and seventh in minutes played with 6,371.
*The Lobos played four straight double-overtime games to end the season, and eight overtime matches overall, one short of the school record, as UNM played nine OT matches, and five straight double overtime matches, in 2010.
*UNM’s string of eight straight winning seasons ended with the result, as did the string of four straight double-digit wins in a season.
