CFPA Weekly National Honors

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The University of New Mexico football team’s special teams continue to earn national recognition through the works of sophomore Carlos Wiggins.

On Monday, College Football Performance Awards named Wiggins as a National Kick Returner of the Week for the second straight week. Wiggins returned his third kick for a touchdown this season during New Mexico’s game at Fresno State on Saturday.

Wiggins scored on an 89-yard return in the third quarter. He also had a 64-yard return in the game and set a school record with 252 return yards.

The native of Plano, Texas, leads the nation with 1,174 kick return yards and ranks fifth in the nation with a 30.1-yard average per return. He won a CFPA National Kick Returner of the Week award last week against Colorado State, in which he had a 100-yard return.

Wiggins has earned four CFPA Weekly national awards this season. He was a CFPA Kick Returner of the Week against New Mexico State, in which he had a 100-yard return, and he earned CFPA All-Purpose Performer national weekly honors after amassing 263 all-purpose yards against UNLV. He had 119 rushing yards and two TDs, scored on a 43-yard reception and had 87 kick return yards.

Wiggins leads the nation with three returns for TDs, and he also has tied a UNM record with the three scores, matching Terance Mathis’ feat in 1989.
