Recap:  The intensity of the new experimental format was definitely shown in the first match of the day between Arizona and Texas A&M Corpus Christi. TAMUCC lead the match 3-2 as Islander Ricardo Mayagoitia battled UA’s Kieren Thompson in the match that would determine the final result. It was a match that kept the crowd on its toes throughout every set. The two opponents battled back and forth through three long sets before Mayagoitia captured the win. Three hours of tennis later, TAMCC takes home their first win of the weekend.

Post-Match Quote from TAMCC Head Coach Steve Moore:

“I think the new format is brilliant. I give a ton of credit to Alan Dils and Bart Scott for deciding to use it. It really is the most smart and efficient format. It is beneficial to everyone. It is beneficial to the teams because we get more ranked opportunities. It is beneficial to the crowd because they see more sudden death. We still keep the player development aspects because we still keep all of the singles. It’s a win, win, win. To me, it is what we need to be doing. All of these other sports have made savvy adjustments to their game to be fan and television friendly and it is time that we make some of those changes.”

“This was a great college tennis match. Arizona deserves this win as much as we do. This is about as close as you can ever get. A lot of respect for Arizona and Coach Berkowitz.”

Recap:  Arizona’s Kieren Thompson faced another long battle on the court, but this time he was able to capture the win. Thompson defeated UC Irvine’s Rafael Davidian, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, to clench the win for Arizona. Thompson competed in back-to-back win-deciding matches. The experimental format once again brought some new energy to the court.

Post-Match Quote from Arizona’s Kieren Thompson:

“I like the new format. It cuts out a lot of extra time before each match. It is nice to get straight into the next match. It is different to come out and play the next opponent right away without warming up or getting to see what they’re like. That could take some getting used to, but other than that I like it.”

Post-Match Quotes from Arizona Head Coach Tad Berkowitz (former Lobo Tennis Player):

“Playing two matches in one day is fine by us, we welcome that challenge. I’m still trying to figure out the new format. We didn’t play doubles today and that could take some getting used to, but I am open to any new format that can help college tennis and help cut the time down.”

“It feels great to be back at UNM. I love it here. Alan, Bart, and Tim Cass are all great guys. When I walk around here it just brings back so many memories. The best days of my life were when I was a Lobo. I cheer for UNM all year long. I love Arizona, but I am proud to be a UNM alumni.”
