Recap:  The new experimental format certainly generated some drama for two very tough teams today at the Linda Estes Tennis Center. UC Irvine and Texas A&M Corpus Christi had the crowd on its toes as they battled for a victory. Both teams had experienced a loss earlier in the day and were hungry for a win. UC Irvine and TAMCC were tied 2-2 half way through match and the intensity in the tennis dome continued to cultivate. After a long three-set match, UC Irvine picked up a win and took the lead, 3-2. This left all the pressure on UC Irvine’s Jonathan Hammel and TAMCC’s Matt Westmoreland. Hammel was competing for team match point and Westmoreland was simply trying to keep TAMCC in the match. The two opponents battled it out through three long sets before Hammel clenched the win and took the match into the first doubles tiebreaker of the weekend. The six doubles teams hit the courts without hesitation and the competition was underway. It didn’t take long for UC Irvine to pick up two wins and take home their first win of the weekend.

Post-Match Quote from UC Irvine Head Coach Trevor Kronemann:

“We got lucky, played well, and hung in there. We had a couple match points to finish it off, but it was exciting to be apart of the first tie-breaker and we’re just happy we pushed through.”
