ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Lobos are traveling to Houston, Texas this weekend to take on UT-San Antonio and the University of Houston in their first matches of the 2014 season.
The University of New Mexico women’s tennis team will open up dual competition against UTSA on Saturday, Jan. 25 at 2 p.m. MTN at the John E. Hoff Tennis Courts at UH. On the following day, the Lobos will face UH at 11 a.m. MTN.
The young Lobo team has a lot of new talent to display in the opening weekend as the roster has seven freshmen in its ten-member lineup.
"After a long holiday break, we're definitely ready to compete this coming weekend and see what this team can do together,” Head Coach Erica Jasper said. “Both opponents are tough and very well-coached, so we're excited for this challenge. To get two high quality matches in this early in the season is huge for us--and hopefully will pay big dividends later on in the season."
Results will be posted at the end of each match on golobos.com
UNM vs. UT – San Antonio:
The Lobos hold a 7-0 record against the Roadrunners. The two teams last met in 2003, where the Lobos won 4-3.
UTSA Head Coach Erin Scott is in her eighth season with the Roadrunners. Just like the Lobos, Scott has a fairly young team this season. The nine-player roster has only one senior.
UNM vs. the University of Houston:
The Lobos hold a 3-8 record against the Cougars with UNM winning the past four matches. The two teams last met in 2004, where the Lobos won 7-0.
UH Head Coach Patrick Sullivan is new to the Cougar tennis program as he is only in his second year with the Cougars. While Sullivan may be a fairly recent addition to the team, the UH roster is loaded with veteran players. The team has only two freshmen in its nine-member roster.
