SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The University of New Mexico completed the first day of competition in the 2014 Mountain West Swimming and Diving Championships this evening.
The Lobos currently hold a fourth-place tie shared with Wyoming; both teams have a total score of 65 points. Nevad leads the event with 107 points. Boise State is second, and San Diego State is third.
Senior Megan Harper, New Mexico’s only diver of the season, kicked off the competition in the 1-meter diving event. She finished in fourth place with a preliminary score of 262.95 points and a final score of 283.17 points.
The Lobos continued in the 200-yard medley relay and the 800-yard freestyle events.
New Mexico’s team of Kaela McKee, Ashley Blanchette, Jorgi Hobson and Shayla King took the first swimming event of the day with a third-place finish, clocking in at 1 minute,38.49 seconds for the 200-yard medley relay. The Lobos improved by 1.05 second from their time in last season's conference meet. The time was a UNM record as a member of the MW.
The final event of the day was the 800-yard freestyle relay, where UNM took ninth place. The team of Caitlin Gardiner, Anna Lilliestrom, Heidi Zeiger and Anna Lengyel finished at 7:24.71.
The Lobos will begin day two Thursday at 11 a.m. with the preliminary round of the 500-yard freestyle.
