ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- The Lobos have two tough matches ahead of them as they host No. 20 Oklahoma and No. 49 Utah this weekend at the Linda Estes Tennis Complex.
The uphill climb continues for the University of New Mexico women’s tennis team, who just suffered a loss against top-25 ranked Texas Tech on Sunday. The young Lobo squad is squaring up against two more worthy opponents and looking to pull off a pair of upsets.
The Lobos open the weekend on Friday when they take on Oklahoma at 5 p.m. MT. The No. 20 Sooners are bringing in a tough lineup that includes five upperclassmen and two ranked opponents. Senior Whitney Ritchie, an Oklahoma native, is currently ranked No. 74 in the latest ITA singles rankings. Ritchie and teammate Mia Lancaster are leading the Sooners in doubles play as they come in at No. 31 in the ITA doubles rankings.
"We are definitely really excited to play at home this weekend against two high quality opponents," head coach Erica Jasper said. "Oklahoma is exceptionally well coaches and an experienced team. They've certainly earned their ranking with their results so far this spring, so it is a great opportunity to get another shot at a top 25 team this season."
Oklahoma has a narrow lead over UNM in the all-time series between the schoos, 8-7. The Lobos are looking to even the series with a win Friday.
The Lobos wrap up the weekend on Sunday when they host the Utes at 11 a.m. MT. The Utes, who have been climbing in the ITA rankings, will also give UNM a tough battle. Senior Sarah Pham is the only UU opponent who is currently ranked. She is sitting at No. 111 in the women’s singles rankings.
"Utah is generally one of the top two teams in our region year in and year out," Jasper said. "They are exceptionally tough in doubles and have a ton of fire power especially at the top of their lineup."
UNM lost to UU last season, 7-0.
Entrance into the Linda Estes Tennis Complex is free and pizza will be served to Lobo fans on Friday night.
