ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- The Lobos recorded their third consecutive loss after falling to No. 49 Utah, 6-1, on Sunday afternoon at the Linda Estes Tennis Complex. All three losses have been against ITA top-50 ranked teams.
The University of New Mexico women’s tennis team has had a long week of matches against quality competition. The Lobos fell to No. 19 Texas Tech, 6-1, last week and followed that up with a 5-2 loss against No. 20 Oklahoma in a close heartbreaker on Friday evening.
The Lobos couldn’t seem to bounce back in time for the match up against the Utes. UNM dropped the match to UU, moving them to 0-3 against ranked opponents.
UNM started off the match with by losing in the doubles competition. The Lobos couldn’t get the momentum going and picked up two quick 8-2 losses in the No. 1 and No. 3 positions. UU took an early 1-0 lead.
“Today was tough,” head coach Erica Jasper said. “Credit to Utah. They out competed us from the start of doubles and we couldn’t find a way to dig ourselves out of that hole. Some of that was inexperience, but some of that was poor preparation for how physical this match would be. Hopefully we can learn from that.”
Natasha Smith seemed to struggle against her former school. Smith, who transferred to UNM from UU at the end of last season, lost her match 6-2, 6-3 against ex-teammate Callie Craig.
The Lobos were down 4-1 when Emily Olivier came through with one point for the Lobos after defeating Da Rosa in the No. 6 position. Olivier holds a 2-1 record against ranked opponents.
Bezdickova and Blankers were the last two off the court for UNM, but they also fell short in their match ups.
“Although we had a few solid individual performances, we’ll need to be much better top to bottom on Tuesday to put ourselves in position to win against Denver,” Jasper said.
The Lobos are now 6-4 on the season.
This week’s schedule does not get any lighter for the Lobos as they face No. 57 Denver on Tuesday and the University of Colorado on Friday.
