ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Two months removed from the 2013 NCAA College Cup semifinals, the University of New Mexico men’s soccer program is hard at work in preparation for the 2014 season. Lobo Men's Soccer has finalized their spring schedule and will play five Saturday exhibitions, which includes three matches in the state of New Mexico. The spring slate of matches will see UNM take on three familiar foes in Denver University, Air Force and Fort Lewis College with a pair of matches against professional clubs Phoenix FC and FC Tucson.
“We are very excited about our spring schedule. Our goal is to provide top competition for our team and this season’s spring schedule provides a challenging mix of opponents,” said Head Coach Jeremy Fishbein. “We will face a full professional team in Phoenix FC, Division I opponents Air Force and Denver, one of the top PDL teams in FC Tucson and a great program from our region in Fort Lewis. Our team is excited to compete this spring and continue our development leading into the fall 2014 season.”
New Mexico will open their spring schedule versus Phoenix FC of the United Soccer League (USL) at 6 p.m. (MT) on Saturday, Mar. 15 at the Grande Sports World Complex in Casa Grande, Ariz. It will be one of the Lobos’ two exhibitions in Arizona against professional competition.
Three weeks later the Lobos will take on former MPSF rival Denver University at the Taos Eco Park in Taos, N.M. on Saturday, April 5 at 11 a.m. (MT). The two teams met last spring at the Taos Eco Park for the first time since both left the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. The Pioneers advanced to the NCAA Tournament last season after winning the Horizon League Championship.
Air Force will be UNM’s opponent in its only home spring exhibition at the Robertson Practice Fields on Saturday, April 12 at 10:30 a.m. (MT). The two teams met last spring and this fall in exhibition action. The Academy wrapped up their first season in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) after leaving the MPSF.
The Lobos will return to Taos to take on Fort Lewis College on Saturday, April 19 at 1 p.m. (MT). Fishbein will face the Skyhawks again after coaching the program from 1992-98. Fort Lewis is one of the top Division II programs and is coming off an 11-win season last year.
Fishbein and the Lobos will wrap up their spring schedule against FC Tucson of the Premier Developmental League (PDL) at the Kino Sports Complex in Tucson, Ariz. on Saturday, May 3 at a time still to be determined.
