In golf tournament, goals can be broken down into several categories. There are team goals. There are individual goals. There also can be goals within goals.
The New Mexico Lobos women’s golf team heads to the 2014 Juli Inkster Spartan Invitational carrying a bag full of goals.
For sure, the Lobos want to beat the teams ahead of them in the GolfStat.com rankings and improve their ranking with a good tournament. New Mexico will carry the No. 67 ranking into the event in San Jose, Calif., and there is one Top 20 team (Oregon, No. 20) and one Top 40 team (UC Davis, No. 35) in the event.
The Lobos would like to beat those two West Coast teams -- and everyone else.
But there also is a lot of Mountain West represented in the Spartan Invitational besides the Lobos: San Jose State, Boise State, Fresno State, Colorado State and Nevada. All those teams are behind the Lobos in the national rankings and the Lobos would like to keep them there.
Those teams have other ideas.
There also are a lot of other teams behind the Lobos in the rankings and those teams also would like to make a charge past New Mexico and other teams.
Lobo Coach Jill Trujillo says she has been waiting for her Lobos to put five good scores together over a single round, but she also has been waiting for three solid team rounds.
To win a golf tournament, a team typically needs to shoot below 290. UNM’s team average is 298.07 in 14 rounds which packages nicely with UNLV’s 296.08 average and San Diego State’s 298.15 average. Nevada is at 304.86.
The UNLV Rebels and San Diego State own the best rankings in the MW at No. 43 and No. 44, respectively. Those two MW powers will be playing in the UCLA Bruin Wave Invitational this week. In the UCLA meet, keep an eye on the dual between UNLV’s Dana Finkelstein and SDSU’s Sirene Blair.
In San Jose, Lobos Sammi Stevens and Manon De Roey are the top rated golfers and should receive Mountain West challenges from Madchen Ly of Fresno State, Nikki Prichard of Nevada and Samantha Martin of Boise State.
The Lobos also get another shot at Oregon and Oregon’s Cassy Isagawa, who smoked New Mexico’s Championship Course in the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational to tie the tourney record in taking medalist honors. Isagawa won the tournament by six shots (12-under) and Oregon came in second – six spots ahead of No. 8 New Mexico.
UNM’s Stevens is the top rated golfer in the 36-hole Inkster/Spartan Invite at No. 32 with a 71.91 stroke average. Isagawa is No. 65 with a 72.8 scoring average. A Ram Choi of Portland State has a 72.91 average.
UNM’s Manon De Roey has been playing well of late. She is coming off an 18th-place finish at the UCF Challenge where her last two rounds were 69 and 71. Four of her past six rounds have been 73 or lower. The Lobos also will be using the talents of Manon Molle, Sofia Hoglund and Katerina Jaeger.
