ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The 2014 Lobo Classic, hosted by the University of New Mexico softball team, welcomes Detroit for a three-game series this weekend.  The two will play a single game on Friday and a doubleheader on Saturday.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENT: This is the first time the Lobos have met with Detroit. The Titans are currently 2-13 on the season and are looking to snap their recent seven-game losing streak. Last weekend at the Louisville Slugger Invitational, the Titans suffered six losses and were outscored by their opponents 58-16. Detroit’s closest game of the tournament was against No. 10/7 Arizona State. The Titans manage to produce four runs across the plate but wasn’t enough to outlast the Sun Devils, falling 6-4.

Detroit’s Kayla Kostich and Kat Hoffman are players to watch out for. Kostich is leading the team with a .316 (12-for-38) batting average. Hoffman is the only Titan with a victory in the circle. With a 10.22 earned run average, she is 2-6 and in 34.1 innings has allowed 44 runs on 62 hits. She has walked 12 and struck out 11.

STRINGING THINGS TOGETHER: Through the first three weekends of play, the Lobos were having a hard time putting the basic softball components together. There were times that the team saw great pitching, but the offense didn’t provide the timely hit. Other times, the clutch hits were produced, but the pitching struggled. At the New Mexico Invitational, the Lobos saw the offense and defense come alive, posting a 3-1 record. New Mexico claimed victories over Buffalo twice and once against Idaho State. All of their wins were come-from-behind victories.

CASADOS TABBED AS MW PLAYER OF THE WEEK: After hitting .125 in the first three weekends, Jasmine Casados found her groove at the New Mexico Invitational and put together her best weekend performance of the season. She went 7-for-13 (.538) at the plate with a .923 slugging percentage and .571 on-base percentage. She drove in a run in each of the Lobos’  first two games of the invitational, helping UNM secure a 5-2 win over Buffalo and a 11-10 victory versus Idaho State on Feb. 28.

Casados tallied six RBIs and scored three times off two doubles, a home run and four singles. Casados went 2-for-3 in the second 5-2 victory overBuffalo on March 1 and was perfect in three at-bats in the 12-9 loss to Idaho State on Sunday which included a three-run bomb that led to an eight-run inning for the Lobos.

THE DROP DEAD TIME WAS DEADLY: Just as the Lobos were getting a rally going in the final game of the New Mexico Invitational, the game was called because Idaho State needed to catch its flight back Idaho. The strung together and eight-run fifth inning but Idaho State pushed one across in the top of the sixth and by that time it was too late for the Lobos to finish the rally they started in the fifth, falling 12-9 to Idaho State in five and half innings.
