ATLANTA, G.A. -- The sixty-seventh ranked Lobos suffered a 4-1 loss to No. 39 Drake on a rainy Sunday in Atlanta, Georgia. The University of New Mexico men’s tennis team finished the weekend at the Blackburn Tennis Center with a 1-1 record and are now 15-6 on the season.
The match was decided by the singles competition. The rain forced the matches to move indoors and the teams had to duke it out on only two different courts. The limited court access caused the teams to eliminate doubles play, unless it was going to be necessary to decide the match.
The DU Bulldogs tallied four wins in singles to claim the match and omit the doubles contests.
The Lobos battled in every match before falling to the highest ranked opponent that they have played this season.
Andrew Van Der Vyver was the only Lobo that recorded a win against the Bulldogs. Van Der Vyver took down DU’s Matt Frost, 6-2, 6-1. He is now 7-5 on the season.
Hayden Sabatka, Samir Iftikhar, James Hignett, and Mads Hegelund all suffered losses allowing DU to take home the win. Iftikhar and Hignett both lost one of their sets in a tiebreak at seven-all. Hegelund lost both of his sets in tiebreakers.
UNM hits the road again this weekend when they travel down to Las Cruces, N.M. to take on the New Mexico State Aggies in a big in-state rivalry match.
