ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Lobos are coming off a tough weekend at the Cowgirl Classic, suffering three losses. The Lobos posted three runs in the first game against Oklahoma State but wasn’t enough to comeback from a 6-0 deficit. The Lobos are looking to put together more offense against New Mexico State as this is the Rio Grande Rivalry game. This is the 136th contest between the two teams. The Lobos have the edge 81-55.

The first time the Aggies and Lobos met was in 1978 and the Aggies recorded a 6-3 win. Last season, the two teams met three times with NMSU taking two of the three games. The Lobos fell 3-0 in the first meeting on Feb. 10 at the Hotel Encanto Tournament held by New Mexico State. On Feb. 19, the Lobos traveled back to Las Cruces for a single game and pulled off a 10-9 victory. UNM hosted NMSU on March 19 and suffered a 2-0 loss.

NMSU is coming off a 2-3 weekend at the Fresno State Classic. The Aggies posted wins against the University of Pacific and Saint Mary’s. They suffered losses to Colorado State, Fresno State and Cal Poly.

SCOUTING NMSU … The Aggies are 17-14 on the season thus far. NMSU started its season off with two home tournaments that included 10 games with wins over UTEP, Texas Tech, Iowa State. The Aggies have been on the road for the past 21 games. They posted a 5-0 weekend at the UTEP Invitational and  went 3-2 at the Eller Media Stadium Classic in Las Vegas.

Junior outfielder Staci Rodriguez is leading the squad with a .423 batting average. In 29 games, she has tallied 33 hits, six doubles, one triples, nine home runs, 27 runs scored, a .872 slugging percentage and a .549 on-base ercentage. In the circle, sophomore Makayla McAdams is leading the team with a 3.87 earned run average. She 6-2 with two complete games and 16 appearances. In 59.2 innings, she has struck out 25 batters and walked 19. She has allowed 38 runs off 63 hits. She has the lowest opposing batting average on the team (.263).

On the season, the Aggies are hitting .294 with 28 doubles, four triples, 34 home runs and 153 runs scored. They own a .468 slugging percentage and a .375 on-base percentage.

COWGIRL CLASSIC … The Lobos had three tough outings at the Cowgirl Classic, hosted by Oklahoma State. The Lobos played a doubleheader against Oklahoma State to start the classic off. The Lobos competed in the first game posting three runs, but wasn’t enough as the Cowgirls put up six. In the second game, the Lobos couldn’t plate any offense, suffering a 5-0 loss.

In the final game of the classic, the Lobos were up against No. 14/16 South Alabama. UNM had a hard time putting any offense together and a hard time holding off the Jaguars. The Lobos only tallied one hit and suffered a 9-0 five-inning loss. The Lobos did limit the Jaguars ace pitcher to just four strikeouts for the game and she is averaging almost two strikeouts per inning.

BOOSTING HER OFFENSE Mia Hignojos has stepped up tremendously at the plate. In her first nine games played of the season, Hignojos did not have a hit. In the last five games she has played, she went 5-for-10. Against Oklahoma State in the second game, Hignojos was perfect in two at-bats with a walk. She went 1-for-3 with an RBI double in the final game against Detroit. In the second game against UTEP she went 1-for-3 with a run scored. She has boosted her average from .000 to .192 (5-for-26) in the her last five games. She owns two RBIs, one double, four walks and four runs scored.

HOME RUN SLUGGER … Freshman Jasmine Casados blasted out her fourth home run of the season in the first game against Oklahoma State. Casados put the ball over the left field wall on the first pitch of the at-bat in the sixth inning. The bomb brought the Lobos from a 6-1 deficit to a 6-3 deficit. Casados four home runs is first on the team. She is second on the team with 16 RBIs. She is hitting .297 on the season with a .594 slugging percentage, a .423 on-base percentage and is second on the team with five doubles. She is first with 13 walks.
