ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – San Diego State scored 11 runs for the second day in a row but as the University of New Mexico softball team pounded out 10 hits, they only ended up with three runs, suffering an 11-3 loss on Saturday afternoon at Lobo Softball Field.

The Aztecs scored first with a run in the second inning. The Lobos responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning. With two outs, Karissa Haleman drew a walk and Willow Kalinen singled to the infield. The two advanced on the same play after a throwing error by the second baseman. Chelsea Anaya knocked in Haleman and Kalinen on a single to left field to take a 2-1 lead.

SDSU answered back with five runs in the third, including a three RBI homer. The Aztecs put two more in the fifth and three more in the seventh.

The Lobos scored one in the seventh before their rally was cut short. Anaya led off with a single to right field. Brandi Heimburg drew a walk and moved Anaya to second. Naomi Tellez hit a hard shot to the third baseman and SDSU couldn’t handle it as the ball went down the left field line and scored Anaya.

The Lobo pitching staff had a rough day in the circle, walking 11 batters. Lisa Rodrigues suffered the loss, dropping to 4-5 on the season. In 2.1 innings, she allowed four runs off three hits while walking six and striking out four. Tess McPherson made a two inning appearance and allowed four runs off six hits. Sheehan was the final pitcher to come into the game and allowed three runs off three hits with two strikeouts and three walks.

SDSU’s Erica Romero, who was issued the save in last night’s match up, earned the victory, allowing three runs off 10 hits while striking out three and walking two.

The Lobos drop to 9-20 on the season and 0-2 in Mountain West play. SDSU improves to 24-8 and 2-0 in conference action. Tomorrow’s game will be the final game of the three-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Lobo softball field.
