ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- After six consecutive matches on the road, the University of New Mexico women’s tennis team returns home this weekend to host Colorado State and Wyoming in a pair of conference matches. The Lobos have not played on their home turf since their 6-1 victory match against Ball State on March 1.
"After a long time on the road, we are very excited to be back home to play in front of our fans,” head coach Erica Jasper said. “Both matches will provide us with some great opportunities to continue to improve--we saw both of these teams quite a bit this fall. They know us well; we know them well, so we'll have some very competitive matches on our hands."
The Lobos (12-7) opened Mountain West play last weekend against Boise State and Utah State. UNM dropped a close 4-3 match to the BSU Broncos, but replied with a win over the Aggies to put them at 1-1 in conference.
UNM continues the MW battle on Friday as they take on the CSU Rams at Linda Estes Tennis Complex at 4 p.m. MT. The 3-7 Rams are currently ranked 10th in the MW standings. Head coach Jon Messick is bringing a ten-player roster that has four upperclassmen including Albuquerque native, Lauren Pick.
The Lobos and the Rams split their match ups last season. UNM defeated the Rams 4-3 in the regular season, but CSU snuck ahead in the MW Tournament and tallied a 4-2 victory against the Lobos. The two opponents also met up on a few occasions during the 2013 fall tournament season, so they are pretty familiar with the Rams’ style of play.
The Rams fell to Nevada in their only MW match so far this season.
UNM wraps up the weekend with a match against the UW Cowboys on Sunday at 11 a.m. MT. The 6-6 Cowboys are ranked 8th in the MW standings, but have not yet started MW play. UW will make a pit stop at Air Force before heading to UNM to open their conference season.
UNM also faced off against a few UW opponents in the fall tournament season, so they have a bit of experience against head coach Dean Clower’s eight-member roster that includes five upperclassmen.
The Cowboys swept the Lobos, 7-0, last year in their regular season match up.
