ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- The University of New Mexico women’s tennis team swept Colorado State 7-0 on Friday afternoon at the Linda Estes Tennis Complex. The Lobos are now 13-7, 2-1 on the season.

UNM started the match with a victory in the No. 2 doubles spot, but the Rams wouldn’t go away easily. Emily Olivier and Susan Baklini fell in the No. 3 spot allowing the Rams to even up the scoreboard. It all came down to the No. 1 doubles match between Michaela Bezdickova and Lizette Blankers and CSU’s Lauren Pick and Natalie Heffron. After duking it out in a tiebreaker at seven-all, the Lobo duo was able to sneak away with the point and give UNM a 1-0 lead.

“I was very disappointed at our discipline in doubles as a whole,” head coach Erica Jasper said.  “Natasha and Dom did an unreal job taking control of the momentum and finishing at #2, but we really struggled at #1 and #3 doubles and were fortunate to escape with the point.  We’ll have to be better on Sunday on the doubles court to give ourselves a chance.”

The Lobos came into singles play with high energy and easily clinched the match. Blankers and Rachana Bhat tallied the first two wins for UNM. Baklini followed with a victory of her own to give the Lobos the match.

Bhat’s win in the No. 5 spot extended her perfect singles record to 11-0.

“I was really proud of how we came out in singles—the team responded to the challenge with great energy, fight, and discipline,” Jasper said. “Lizette, Rachana, and Susie made quick work of their opponents to clinch the team match which was huge for us.  It also was very nice to be back at home.  We had a nice, enthusiastic crowd, which is a huge advantage for us.  Hopefully we can have another great crowd on Sunday for our match against Wyoming.”

Bezdickova, Dominique Dulski, and Meredith Hopson closed out the match with three more Lobo victories to give UNM the 7-0 sweep.

The Lobos play again on Sunday at 11 a.m. MT when they take on the Wyoming Cowboys in another tough conference match up. Free pizza will be served to all spectators after the doubles point!
