New Mexico –3 Denver University-0

TAOS, N.M.  – In their second spring exhibition in six days, the University of New Mexico Lobos took care of business against former conference rival Denver University. The Lobo attack was active early and often in a 3-0 victory on a cold morning in Taos, which saw snowy conditions in the second half. A James Rogers goal in the first half was followed by goals from Rene Reyes and Josh Goss in the second half. Goalkeepers Patrick Poblete and James Schneebeck combined to keep the Pioneers off the board.

The Lobos kept the game in the Denver half of the field for a majority of the first 45 minutes. UNM fired off five shots with two coming on goal to just one Pioneer shot. The New Mexico attack yielded a chance in the first three minutes of action when a Christopher Wehan cross was nearly headed in by Niko Hansen. Hansen also put a shot on frame in the first ten minutes, which forced the first Denver save of the morning.

New Mexico’s first-half goal came off a stoppage in play after a yellow card was issued to Denver. A quick restart by the Lobos near midfield found a streaking Wehan down the left flank. The freshman attacked to the inline before finding Rogers for a sliding goal in the box for the one-goal halftime advantage.

The constant attacking pressure from the Lobos produced two goals and a handful of other scoring chances in the second half. Riley McGovern was the catalyst for the first serious attack when he intercepted a pass near midfield and drove down the field shaking a pair of Pioneer defenders in the process. His pass deep in the box was just behind Ben McKendry. Twelve minutes later, Rogers nearly scored his second goal of the game, but his blast from the top of the box hit the crossbar.

Rene Reyes scored his first-ever goal in a UNM uniform in the 66th minute off a pass from Hansen. Reyes unloaded his shot past a sliding DU goalkeeper to the far post. New Mexico had a two goal advantage and continued to press until the very last second.

Coach Fishbein and the Lobos’ third and final goal of the game came off the foot of Josh Goss with eight seconds remaining in the game. The scoring action began off an Oniel Fisher direct ball that found Goss past midfield. The streaking Goss got behind the Denver backline and fired a blistering shot as the keeper came out to stuff the run.

“I am real happy with our performance today. I thought we came out with a real desire to improve from our first match against the Colorado Rapids. The guys brought a lot of energy and got some nice individual goals. Collectively, I thought our defense, pressure and communication were really strong. We are continuing to work on getting better every week, and now we are excited for our next match at home.” – Head Coach Jeremy Fishbein

“We started things off with a nice goal from James (Rogers) off the work of Chris Wehan. We followed that up with some quality finishing from Rene (Reyes) and Josh (Goss). Those guys, along with everyone else, really helped us get a good result against a team that was in the NCAA Tournament last season.”
