ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The University of New Mexico men’s soccer program has a motto that embodies a particular mindset; “commitment to excellence”.
That excellence also applies to the quality of the opponents on the Lobos’ schedule.
Head coach Jeremy Fishbein has released the team’s 2014 schedule, and it includes the “who’s who” of national programs and NCAA Tournament regulars. Matches against Akron, UCLA, Cal State Northridge and VCU highlight the non-conference portion of the Lobos’ schedule that includes eight NCAA Tournament participants from last season with three of them earning top 16 seeds.
“We are very excited to release what we feel is one of the better schedules we’ve had,” Fishbein noted. “Our schedule is highlighted by matches against perennial national powerhouses. Having home matches against Akron, UCLA and VCU before conference play is exciting for our fans and our players.”
In addition to home dates with the Zips, Bruins and Rams, New Mexico will also face UC Riverside, Drexel, West Virginia and Missouri State outside of the Conference USA schedule.
The Lobos will face C-USA foes Florida International, Old Dominion, Marshall and South Carolina at the UNM Soccer Complex while traveling to Charlotte, Florida Atlantic, Kentucky and UAB. The conference will have nine men’s soccer members this fall after finishing with one of the top conference RPI’s in the nation last season.
“The goal of our program is to play the best teams in the country and our schedule will allow us to do that week in and week out,” Fishbein continued.
The Lobos will officially begin the 2014 season with a trio of fall exhibitions against familiar regional opponents in Fort Lewis College, Denver University and Air Force before beginning official action with the season opener versus Akron on Friday, August 29 at 7 p.m. at the UNM Soccer Complex.
