ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – New Mexico’s assistant women’s tennis coach Kelcy McKenna has been named the ITA Mountain Region Assistant Coach of the Year as announced by The Intercollegiate Tennis Association on Tuesday morning. This is McKenna’s second season with the Lobos.

“I am so happy for Kelcy—this award is well deserved,” head coach Erica Jasper said. “I am thrilled that our region’s coaches recognize her talents and efforts.  She has been an integral part of our re-building process here.  From day one it has been a team effort and I cannot thank her enough for all the work she has put in.”

Mckenna is much deserving of the award as the young Lobo team had a breakthrough season this spring. McKenna and Jasper led the team to a final record of 17-8, which was a vast improvement from last season’s 7-15 finish. The Lobos also earned their most wins since 2004, received their first ITA ranking since 2009, and earned a spot in the final match of the Mountain West Championships for the first time since 2004.

Aside from playing the role of assistant coach, McKenna served as interim head coach for the last month of the 2014 season due to the early arrival of Coach Jasper’s baby. She stepped in and coached the Lobos through their final regular season match as well as the conference championships.

“Kelcy handled almost all of our individual skill work with the players in the spring and did it with boundless enthusiasm and a smile,” Jasper said.

McKenna has also been integral in the Lobo’s community efforts. She runs UNM’s fall Ladies Leagues and is the lead for the team’s fundraising clinics throughout the season. Additionally, she formed a committee of volunteers this spring to help build attendance and fan awareness and coordinated high school night for the team. The Lobos had over 300 fans in attendance at their high school night match and offered a meet and greet with the team.

“As a head coach I could not ask for a better assistant,” Jasper said. “Kelcy is a great head coach in the making and an excellent role model and mentor for our players.”
