ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Head coach Bob Davie and the Lobo Football program have announced their trio of captains for next season. Senior offensive lineman LaMar Bratton, junior quarterback Cole Gautsche and sophomore linebacker Dakota Cox have been selected as captains for the 2014 season, which begins on Saturday, August 30 versus UTEP at Branch Field at University Stadium.
"This is a great honor and responsibility for these three because they were chosen by their teammates," said head coach Bob Davie. "All three are great leaders, and the fact that we have a junior and a sophomore as captains shows the youth and direction of this program."
Bratton, a versatile offensive lineman, has been a fixture in the trenches for the Lobos after redshirting as a freshman. He’s started in all of New Mexico’s 37 games over the past three seasons while earning all-conference honorable mention honors in 2012 and 2013. Bratton has also been an academic all-conference selection during his career as a Lobo. Bratton is a fifth-year senior who earned his degree in Business Management in May of 2014.
Gautsche is coming off a sophomore campaign in 2013 that saw him finish as one of the top rushing quarterbacks in the nation. His five games of more than 100 yards rushing propelled him to a 6.6 yards per carry average, fourth in the NCAA among signal callers. The left-hander tripled his passing yardage total from his freshman season to his sophomore season and has amassed over 1,500 career rushing yards in just 21 career appearances.
Cox, a native of Draper, Utah, made the most of his first season of college football in 2013 by earning Freshman All-American honors from the Football Writers Association of America. The linebacker led the Lobos with 99 tackles and became the first freshman in 20 seasons to lead New Mexico tackling. Cox progressed as the season continued with an average of 12.6 tackles per game during his last five games of the season while earning academic all-conference honors as a freshman.
The Lobos will open their 2014 season by hosting UTEP at Branch Field and University Stadium on Saturday, August 30. It’s the opener to a schedule that includes seven bowl teams and three conference divisional champions from a year ago.
