ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Major League Baseball Hall of Famer and San Diego State head coach Tony Gwynn passed away at the age of 54 Monday. His loss was felt throughout the Mountain West and the country. Below is a statement from UNM head coach Ray Birmingham.

"Tony Gwynn was the best baseball player I ever knew and the greatest coach I ever competed against, but above all he was a great person too. He was a class act who always represented himself well both on and off the field. UNM Baseball and the entire baseball community feels this loss tremendously. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time."
