ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The University of New Mexico men’s basketball program and head coach Craig Neal have announced the addition of Samford transfer Tim Williams to the team. Williams, who played the last two seasons with the Bulldogs, will redshirt the 2014-15 season after transferring and be eligible as a junior for the Lobos in 2015-16.

“We are really excited to have Tim join our program,” said head coach Craig Neal. “He was what we were looking for in that he’s an impact transfer who was one of the top scorers in the Southern Conference. On top of that, he is a great kid who really values academics. Tim will be a great fit on our team after redshirting next season. He comes from a great family, and I am looking forward to coaching him and seeing big things from him in the future.”

The 6-foot-8-inch forward made the most of his two seasons at Samford. He was the Southern Conference Freshman of the Year in 2012-13 after averaging 14.2 points, 7.1 rebounds, 1.4 steals and 1.1 blocks per game. His freshman campaign also earned him a spot on the All-SoCon Third Team.

Williams followed up his stand-out rookie season with a First Team All-Southern Conference performance as a sophomore. The power forward averaged 17.6 points, 7.3 rebounds, 1.3 steals and 1.4 blocks per game. He also shot 60.3% from the field for the year, which tied for seventh in the nation.

A native of Chicago, Illinois, Williams had a decorated prep career at Homewood-Flossmoor High School. His cousin, Scott Robinson, played football at Western Michigan University.

Williams chose New Mexico over Iowa, Dayton and Vanderbilt among other schools.
