University of New Mexico redshirt freshman golfer Andre Garcia finished in a tie for eighth place in a field of 120 at the third annual Magnolia Amateur in Hattiesburg, Miss.
Garcia’s 2-under 69 in the final round on Sunday put him at even par for the event (70-74-69=213). He finished 11 strokes behind tournament winner Kevin Brady of Southern Mississippi.
Garcia redshirted at UNM last season while recovering from a wrist injury.
Fellow Lobo freshman Matt Krutz tied for 58th place at 11-over 224 (79-70-75).
US AMATEUR PUBLIC LINKS CHAMPIONSHIP: Lobo seniors Gavin Green and Sam Saunders, and Lobo sophomore Andrej Bevins are competing today in the first round of the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship at the Sand Creek Station Golf Course in Newton, Kan.
Bevins and Saunders tee off this morning on the par-71, 7,365-yard course. Green will tee off this afternoon. Live scoring is available at USGA.org.
The event consists two rounds of stroke play. The field of 156 golfers will be pared down to 64 for the start of match play on Wednesday. Match play will continue through Saturday with a 36-hole championship match.
The field of 105 of the nation’s top amateurs includes players representing 43 states and 13 countries. The oldest player in the event is 57-year-old William Arnold of Anchorage, Alaska, while the youngest is 15-year-old Issei Tanabe of Japan.
