In Newton, Kan., University of New Mexico rising senior golfer Sam Saunders fired a 1-under 70 on Monday to finish in a tie for 15th place after the first round of the US Amateur Public Links Championship.
The event features 156 of the nation’s top amateurs in the last Public Links event. The format is 36 holes of stroke play that continues Tuesday. The top 64 players then enter a match-play format that runs through Saturday with the championship match.
Saunders trails a trio of leaders – Michael Colgate, Garrett Rank and Zane Thomas – by four strokes. The leaders shot a 5-under 66 in the first round.
Fellow rising senior Gavin Green shot a 2-over 73 and is tied for 52nd place. Rising UNM sophomore Andrej Bevins opened with a 4-over 75 and is tied for 87th after the first round.
The 89th annual event will the last one played as the USGA is retiring the competition after this year.
