In Newton, Kansas, the University of New Mexico men’s golf team is guaranteed to have one player in the round of 16 at the 89th annual US Amateur Public Links Championship.
Rising Lobo seniors Gavin Green and Sam Saunders each won their opening match-play competitions on Wednesday, setting up a head-to-head showdown on Thursday morning. Later on Wednesday, rising sophomore Andrej Bevins fell to England’s Sam Horsfield 2 and 1.
Saunders, the No. 5 seed, defeated fellow Albuquerquean and Hope Christian High player Sean Carlon (No. 60) 3 and 2 in their first-round match. A few minutes later, Green, the No. 28 seed advanced to the round of 32 with a 2 and 1 victory over No. 37 Herbie Aikens of Pembroke, Mass.
The two will play each other beginning at 7 a.m. MT on Thursday in the round of 32. The round of 16 will take place later Thursday.
No. 59 Bevins was one up midway through the match against the No. 6 Horsfield but lost three strokes in the last seven holes.
Bevins advanced to match play after finishing in an 11-way tie for 58th place during stroke play, with only seven of those players moving on to match play. He birdied the first hole of the playoff to make it through.
