In Flagstaff, Ariz., University of New Mexico senior golfer Sam Saunders shot a 1-under-par 69 on Friday to finish in a tie for seventh place at the 48th Pacific Coast Amateur Championship.
Saunders totaled an 8-under 272 (69-72-62-69) during the 72-hole event to create a five-way tie for fifth place. He was 11 strokes behind the winner, Corey Pereira of Cameron Park, Calif.
The two golfers shot matching 62s during Thursday’s third round.
Saunders double-bogeyed the first hole to put himself at a quick disadvantage but came back with three birdies and 14 pars the rest of the way. He birdied the 588-yard, par-5 16th hole in all four rounds.
His play capped a solid month of golf by the Lobo men’s golf team. Last week, senior Victor Perez tied for second at the 108th Southern Amateur Championship in Chattanooga, Tenn., and that came on the heels of senior Gavin Green’s Round of 16 appearance at the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship in Newton, Kansas.
