ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The 2014-15 University of New Mexico men’s golf team has been ranked 16th in the Golfweek/Sagarin preseason poll.
The Lobos, the two-time defending Mountain West champions, return their entire starting squad from 2013-14. That team won four tournaments, advanced to the NCAA Regionals and missed out on a chance to play in the NCAA Championship by a single stroke.
Senior Gavin Green, who tied a school record with four individual tournament wins last season, was ranked as the No. 31 men’s collegiate golfer at the end of last season’s rankings, which had yet to be updated. The native of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia needs one individual victory this season to become the school’s all-time leader in individual tournament titles with six.
He was a second-team All-America selection in 2013-14
Fellow senior and three-time All-Mountain West honoree Victor Perez (Semeac, France) was No. 105 and senior Sam Saunders (Albuquerque) was No. 182.
UNM begins the 2014-15 season Sept. 7-8 when it travels to Independence, Minn. For the Gopher Invitational with the University of Minnesota serving as host. New Mexico is the defending champions in the event.
The Lobos’s home tournament, the 60th annual William H. Tucker Intercollegiate, takes place Sept. 26-27 at the UNM Championship Course.
