ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Oniel Fisher was named Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week Tuesday after scoring the game-winning goal against No. 13 Akron last Friday. The senior from Portmore, Jamaica, also tied for the team lead with three shots and two shots on goal.
Less than three minutes into the match Fisher took a pass from Christopher Wehan at the top of the box and slid it into the near post just past the outstretched arms of Akron's keeper. It was his second career goal, and his second career game-winning goal, as he opened the scoring in UNM's 2-0 win over Penn State in the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA tournament last season.
Fisher also generated numerous chances for his teammates with excellent feeds into the box as the Lobos outshot the Zips 20-5.
The Lobos return to action this weekend with a pair of home matches in the Grange & Ashwill Memorial Tournament. They faceoff against UC Riverside at 7 p.m. Friday and then host No. 1 UCLA at 6 p.m. Sunday in the tournament's finale.
