Postgame Quotes 10-5-13

Opening Statement Coach Davie:

“It was really a continuation on our offensive performance from last week. I’m really starting to feel the explosiveness of the young guys as they continue to mature. We will see what we really recruited for this offense.

“Carlos Wiggins, Ridge Jones, and Teriyon Gipson, we got some really good speed guys out there that will really start to make that offense look really explosive. Also offensively, Cole Gautsche is really developing as a passer. He got a couple really good throws, and then defensively we were able get that big turnover in the first half by Tevin Newman.

“As we continue to grow, you guys know what it is, it’s developing a defense…..It’s continuing to develop a defense.”

Granted it was a lopsided game, you started a lot of different guys especially the running backs, how did that feel to take pressure off (Kasey Carrier) and (Cole Gautsche)?”

“No question about it, look at how many players touched the ball. We’ve got a lot of good young skilled players in this program along with those older guys, it’s a pretty good combination of some different style players.”

What does this do for the confidence of the players, 66 points, big rivalry win?

“I think we’ve done a good job. I think we know what we are. I think we know what to do to win. It feels good to get a win, there is no hiding that.”

UNM players

DE Brett Bowers on the defensive performance this week as opposed to last week…

“Well I just got a big smile on my face; we played a lot better this week. We definitely picked it up, did our jobs.”

On the mindset of this game compared to last weeks…

“We were mostly just hungry for a win. We forgot about last week and came out to play this week.”

On what the atmosphere is like in the locker room after the win…

“Lots of smiles and jumping around, everyone is pretty happy.”

On what the attitude is like now going into a road game in Wyoming…

“We shouldn’t take them lightly because we got a big win. We got to come out to play, but it shows that we can definitely play better than we did last week.”

RB Kasey Carrier

On why they were able to exploit NMSU so early and so often…

“Momentum came on our side very quick and our offensive line just dominated from the start.”

On the big day the Lobos had defensively…

“It made us feel real good. We have a defense that had a bad week last week but this week came out and played well. We have a lot of playmakers on that side of the ball. Tonight they came out played and showed it.”

On how big this game was…

“It was very big, we needed to start off 1 and 0 from here on out and next week. We wanted to get this win. I’ve never won here in my tenure so it meant a lot,”

On meeting former players before the game…

“I can’t remember all of the names but just hearing those guys’ stories and letting us know how they feel about this game and coming back to talk to us, it means a lot and me personally I didn’t understand the meaning of this rivalry until last year when coach had guys that came in and talked to us and I’m glad he did that again.”

On the mentality going into Wyoming…

“We know Wyoming is a great football team with a pretty good quarterback, so we are going to have to come out and play our game”

On how Gautsche helps keep the pressure off of him…

“It makes everything a lot easier because now the safeties aren’t thinking about staying in the box and they have to roll with the guy in motion.”

On the depth of the running back position…

“We have some very talented running backs in the backfield, Crusoe Gongbay, Demarcus Rogers, Jhurell Pressley, and the young guy Teriyon Gipson. Them coming into the game and doing what they did shows that we do have a lot of depth in that position.”

NMSU coach Doug Martin

Could you talk about the slow start of the game, specifically first 3 series?

Yeah, we are just stagnant offensively right now – we just don’t have guys making plays. We need to re-evaluate this open week, who the playmakers are, putting them in the right situations to make plays. It’s obvious the guys out there right now aren’t making anything happen. We need to score more points than what we are right now.

What were your overall thoughts of the game?

Well you know, our guys play hard and compete hard but we make too many stakes to give ourselves a chance. Especially to give our defense a chance, we don’t score enough points, and give enough plays to special teams. The snap on the punt, that’s just ridiculous to be doing those types of things. We keep putting our defense with their backs against the wall all the time. The main thing is we have to get to where we can score points.

Obviously rush defense, they ran the ball very well. Could you just talk about what that meant to the game?

Yeah they’ve run the ball well against everyone they’ve played, the only way you beat a wishbone football team is to score points because they’re going to get their yards. You need to keep your defense in the game by scoring, and we weren’t able to do that.

What was your impression of the UNM offensive line?

Oh yeah, they are really well coached – I’ve worked with Jason Lenzmeier – he does a great job coaching the offensive line. They’re two years into this scheme now, and they know what they’re doing and they’ve got some speed in the backfield. They’ve got guys who can make people miss and make plays.

Was King Davis healthy? He obviously did not play

He wasn’t healthy enough, he did practice Wednesday and Thursday but I just didn’t feel like it was fair to him to put him out there at this stage. I just didn’t think that would be fair to him coming off of the concussion.

When you got the touchdown to make it 21-7, how did that kickoff return affect your guys?

Yeah it’s a killer, all the sudden you have some momentum because you’ve scored and then you give up a big play like that. Those things just take all the wind out of you. Especially your defense, you give up points when they’re not even on the field.

What were some of the differences you saw with the UNM defense as opposed to a few years ago?

I don’t think it was anything about UNM; it was about what we had. Before, Matt Christian was our quarterback and he made plays –running, throwing. We had running backs who made plays, wide receivers who made plays. And we don’t have enough fire power on offense right now.

What are some thoughts you would say that stopped you from executing quarterback runs?

The quarterback running is not Andrew’s strength; he’s mobile but that’s not his strength. He manages the game and puts the ball where it’s supposed to be most of the time. The turnovers, we just weren’t good enough tonight.
