ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The University of New Mexico softball team allowed UNLV to score early, but couldn’t quite find its groove to make a comeback, dropping the second game of the series 10-2 in five innings on Friday afternoon at Lobo Softball Field.

The Lobos gave up five runs in the first inning to the Rebels, including a grand slam. They came back in the bottom half of the inning to score one run. Brandi Heimburg led off the inning with a double to left center and advanced to third on Shelbie Franc’s single up the middle. She then scored on Mariah Rimmer’s hot ball to third.

After the Rebels got to starting Lobo pitcher, Lauren Soles, Lisa Rodrigues came in the circle and pitched a scoreless second inning but allowed a run in the third for the Rebels to take a 6-1 lead.

UNM rallied again in the bottom of the inning when Franc led off the inning with an infield single. Naomi Tellez then singled to left field to move Franc second. The bases were then loaded after Rimmer’s ran quickly for a bunt-for-base-hit. Franc then scored on Jasmine Casados’ sacrifice fly to left field.

The Lobos’ gave up four more runs the rest of the way but battled in their final at bats. With one out, Casados singled up the middle and Jordan Sjostrand doubled to left center to put runners on second and third. Mia Hignojos drew a bases-loaded walk but the Lobos’ bats were quiet to end the game.

New Mexico pounded out 10 hits with Heimburg, Franc and Rimmer all collecting two apiece. Tellez, Casados, Sjostrand and Kalinen all tallied one hit.

Soles took the loss in the circle, allowing five runs on four hits while walking one. Rodrigues allowed five runs off 10 hits while walking two and striking out two.

The Lobos drop to 13-28 on the season and 4-10 in the Mountain West conference. UNLV boosts its record to 18-24 overall and 8-6 in the conference. New Mexico will look for their first series win tomorrow against UNLV at 1 p.m.
