In her Lobos’ final 54-hole outing of fall ball, New Mexico Coach Jill Trujillo has several goals for her golf team.

Of course, she wants them to shoot lights out.  She likes the talent on her 2013-14 squad, but has yet to see her Lobos package together their best score cards over the same 18 holes.

She also would like to see them edge past Mountain West contenders UNLV and San Diego State which also are battling in the 17-team Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown to be held Sunday, Monday and Tuesday on the Stallion Mountain Golf Club. Fresno State and Nevada of the MW also are in the hunt.

“We need some head-to-head wins,” said Trujillo looking at the field.  “We also need some head-to-head wins against San Diego State and UNLV which are in our conference.

“It’s important to finish high in the final tournament of the fall and go into the off-season with a good ranking.  For the most part, they (Lobos) need to keep doing what they are doing.

“It’s also important for Sammi (Stevens) and Manon (De Roey) to have a good tournament. The final tournament in the fall just sets the stage for when we start up again in February.”

The head-to-head battle with the SDSU Aztecs and the UNLV Rebels is an interesting and close one heading into the fourth tournament of the fall.  At the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational in Austin, Texas, the Aztecs finished ninth, UNLV was tenth and UNM came in 14th.  The Aztecs beat UNM by 17 shots.

In Austin, UNLV’s Dana Finkelstein tied for second and UNM’s Stevens was a shot back as she closed with a career-high tying 67. SDSU’s Sirene Blair was two shots behind Stevens,

In UNM’s Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational, the Lobos finished ahead of UNLV, but behind San Diego State by six shots.  Blair tied for third on UNM’s Championship Course with Stevens in the No. 16 slot a shot ahead of Finkelstein.

Finkelstein won CSU’s Colonel Wollenberg Ptarmigan Ram Classic by a stroke over Stevens and the Rebels finished fourth three shots ahead of UNM. SDSU did not play in the CSU invite.

Finkelstein carries a 71.44 stoke average into Vegas with Stevens at 71.56 and Blair at 72.44.  Those are the only three Mountain West golfers listed in Golfstat’s Top 100.  UNM’s Manon De Roey is in the No. 123 spot with her 74.33 scoring average.

“This is a really important tournament for us,” said Trujillo.

The Lobos five-player roster in Las Vegas will be Stevens, De Roey, Sofia Hoglund, Katerina Jaeger and Manon Molle.  Senior Dea Mahendra, a transfer from Lander University, will compete in her first tournament as a Lobo.  “She is pretty excited,” Trujillo said of Mahendra.

The Lobos will play a practice round on Saturday and tee off around 8 a.m. on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. The field also includes Denver, Fresno State, Furman, Idaho, Kansas State, Long Beach State, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, Texas Tech, UC Irvine, UCF and Wisconsin.

UCF holds the highest GolfStat ranking at 30 followed by Denver (34), Wisconsin (37) and San Diego State (43).  UNM is ranked No. 57 and UNLV is No. 49.

Trujillo’s roster has three seniors and two freshmen: Molle’ and Jaeger. The Lobo coach said they have been working on stronger finishes – over 18 holes and in a tournament's final round.

“You don’t want to mess too much with swings or technique with tournaments coming up,” said Trujillo.  “When you are a young player, sometimes the mental thing is what you need to work on and improve the most.

“Juggling school and collegiate athletics is not an easy thing to do.  Especially with freshmen, there are a lot of things going on in their heads and focusing on the task at hand is easier said than done.”

The Lobos won the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown in 2002 and 2003.  Indiana won the tourney in 2012, but is not back to defend.  “
