LAS VEGAS, Nev.  – If the New Mexico Lobos needed any extra motivation over their winter break it was provided in the weather-shortened Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown completed Tuesday after 36 holes over the Stallion Mountain Golf Club.

The team title went to San Diego State of the Mountain West with the UNLV Rebels falling into a three-way tie for second place.  The medalist honors went to Aztec freshman Sirene Blair, who posted her first collegiate win powered by a 67 on Tuesday’s final 18 holes.

The Lobos improved their team score by five shots on the second 18 holes and fell into the No. 12 spot, tied with Nevada of the Mountain West. Fresno State of the MW finished two shots behind New Mexico and Nevada.

The tournament’s second round on Monday was cancelled due to high winds created from a storm sweeping out of the Northwest and heading through Nevada and toward New Mexico. That forced the Vegas Collegiate Showdown to cut the competition down to 36 holes.

Senior Sammi Stevens again paced New Mexico as she carded a 72 on Tuesday to finish tied for 20th with a two-round card of 147.  Teammate Manon De Roey was a shot back with a 73-75—148 card that left her in a tie for the 26th spot.  Senior Sofia Hoglund cut two shots off her first 18-hole card and went 76-74—150 which was good to tie for the 40th spot.

UNM’s Stevens and UNLV’s Dana Finkelstein went into the fall as arguably the top two golfers in the Mountain West, but Blair has turned that into a three-player chase.

The talented Aztec rookie burned the Stallion Mountain Golf Club on Tuesday with her 5-under 67 that gave her a two-shot win over UCF’s Ashley Holder (73-67—140). Blair was 4-under after seven holes and 6-under after 14 holes before closing with two bogeys, one birdie and a par to card her 67.  She shot 71 on Sunday’s first round. Holder had five birdies on Tuesday, no bogeys and 13 pars.

The first-round leader, Texas Tech’s Elin Arvidsson, had a 71 on Tuesday to finish third with a two-round card of 141.

Finkelstein shot a 74 on Tuesday and had a 145 total to beat Stevens (147) by two shots. UNLV’s Mayko Chwen Wang had a 144 card and the Aztecs got cards of 145 from both Emma Henrikson and Paige Spiranac to help SDSU grab the 36-hole team title.

The Aztecs’ win in Las Vegas gave SDSU back-to-back tournaments in which they finished ahead of UNM and UNLV.  Stevens and Finkelstein finished ahead of Blair in at the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational, but the SDSU freshman got the win in Vegas. Stevens played steady golf on Tuesday with one birdie and one bogey on her even-par 72 card.

UNLV was in first place after 18 holes and were leading the Aztecs by two shots.  The Aztecs improved their second-18 card by a shot while the Rebels added five shots to their first-18 card thus giving the Aztecs the win.

The Lobos next tournament is Feb. 9-11 in Orlando, Fla.
