The New Mexico Lobos did not get the team finish they wanted Tuesday in the final round of the UCF Challenge, but Lobo Coach Jill Trujillo had a lot to be pleased about with the play of Manon De Roey.

The senior, who threw out a sizzling 69 on Monday to jump 43 spots, added a solid 1-under 71 to her scorecard on Tuesday to finish tied for 18th in the 19-team tournament held at the Eagle Creek Golf Club in Orlando, Fla.

It’s important for both seniors – De Roey and Sammi Stevens – to score low in 2014 to take some of the pressure off a young New Mexico roster.  Stevens struggled on Tuesday shooting a 5-over 77 with three bogeys and one double bogey.

However, Stevens is coming off an outstanding fall season and has played at a consistent level her entire UNM career. Stevens had 41 pars over her 54 holes in Orlando and only four players in the field posted more pars with 44 the high. Both De Roey and Stevens were 1-over par on the par-4s.

De Roey had three birdies against two bogeys to go under par for the second straight day. She played the par-5 holes at Eagle Creek in 3-under par.

Here’s a telling fact about De Roey’s final two rounds.  She was one-shot better over the final 36 holes than UCF’s Fanny Cnops, who took medalist honors for the 54-hole shootout.  De Roey was only two shots away from a top ten finish, having to rally from a first-round score of 76.

“I was really proud of the way Manon finished,” said Trujillo.  “She had some tough breaks on her first round, but came back focused and made a nice charge up the leaderboard. That's exactly what you expect from a senior."

The Lobos did not score well as a team over the final 18 holes as the course was set up a bit tougher and only seven of the 19 teams improved their score from the second round.  Only one Lobo, Eva Saulnier, on UNM’s five-player roster improved her score from Monday.  UNM dropped from 12th place into a tie for the 15th spot with a team score of 300.  UNM shot 298 over the first 18 holes and 291 on the second round.

The final round provided a see-saw battle between UCF and a charging Iowa State for the team title. The UCF Knights gave up five shot to Iowa State over the final 18 holes, but the Knights held on for the dramatic one-shot victory. UCF shot 290 on Tuesday and Iowa State shot 285.

The team title went down to the final hole, but UCF’s Cnops took some of the drama out of the individual race with a three-shot victory over Casey Kennedy of GRU Augusta. East Tennessee State’s Sian Evans was third at 212.  Cnops had a bogey on No. 17, but finished with a birdie on the par-5 18th to seal her win.

The Lobos will be hitting the practice links over the next few weeks as their next collegiate action is March 3-4 at the Julie Inkster Spartan Invitational in San Jose, Calif.
