Lobo Coach Jill Trujillo and ex-Lobo Sammi Stevens, who combined coaching and playing skills to win the 2014 Mountain West Championship, are continuing their winnings ways.

JILL TRUJILLO COACH OF YEAR: Trujillo, who is in her eighth season as head coach for the University of New Mexico’s women’s golf team, was named the Central Section Coach of the Year by the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) Teaching and Club Professional (T&CP) membership.

The LPGA T&CP gives out annual awards in five sections: Central, Midwest, Northeast, Southeast and Western.  Trujillo was one of four collegiate coaches to receive that organization’s Coach of the Year honors for 2014.  Trujillo also was named the Central Section Coach of the Year in 2009 and 2007.  UNM’s 2014 MW title was the fourth for a Trujillo-led UNM squad and she was named the Mountain West’s 2014 Coach of the Year for women’s golf.

SAMMI STEVENS WINS, TOO: Stevens, one of the more consistent golfers to ever swing a club at UNM, has been using the Cactus Tour to help warm her up for the LPGA Qualifying  School.   Stevens turned pro in May after leaving UNM and has her eye on the LPGA Tour.   Stevens posted her first Cactus Tour win in July in Shady Valley Texas with a two-shot win over Liz Nagel.  Stevens shot a 54-hole total of 217 to best Nagel’s card of 219.  Stevens shot a 68 in her second round which propelled her to the victory.

Stevens also took runner-up honors on Aug. 13 at the Ocotillo Golf Resort near Phoenix.

Stevens shot herself into a hole with a first-day card of 78 that had her in 18th place.  She rallied to go 71-69 to scratch back into a second-place tie.  She tied Britney Yada with a 54-card of 218.  That victory actually went to an amateur, Raychelle Santoa, who was hot for all three rounds and posted a 211.

Jodi Ewart Shadoff Update.   Ewart Shadoff, arguable the best golfer to ever play for the New Mexico women’s team, has played in 17 LPGA events this season with one Top 10 finish.  She has made $161,665 this season and currently is ranked 64th in the Rolex Rankings.  Her scoring average is 71.8
