New Mexico junior Sammi Stevens has been selected Mountain West Women's Golfer of the Week for tournaments played April 12 - 16. This marks the second award for Stevens this spring.
Stevens placed third out of 78 golfers at the Fresno State Lexus Classic Diego held in Fresno, Calif., April 15 - 16. The Hereford, Texas, native carded a 4-over-par 218 (73-69-76) on the par 72, 6,212-yard course at Copper River Country Club. Stevens recorded 10 birdies across the tournament, including six in the second round, en route to tying her lowest finish as a Lobo. Her second-round 69 tied a career best, after previously notching a 69 as a freshman in the second round of the 2011 Mountain West Championship.
Stevens' total score of 218 ties for the second-lowest 54-hole total of her career and marked her second top-three finish in the past three tournaments. The junior has finished in the top 10 in three of New Mexico's five spring outings.
Through 26 rounds, Stevens leads New Mexico and ranks second in the Mountain West with a 74.62 stroke average.
The Lobos will be at the MW Championships April 25-27 in Rancho Mirage, Calif.
