Golf tournaments aren’t technically seeded like NCAA March Madness, but if the San Diego State’s Farms Invitational had those types of tags, Jill Trujillo’s Lobos would be looking at a couple of No. 1 seeds.

The field attacking the Farms Golf Club in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday definitely has its bullies as No.1 ranked Southern Cal and No. 2 ranked UCLA highlight the field of 17 teams.

And, of course, this isn’t just a team-tough field.  The individuals competing read like a Who’s Who of women’s collegiate golf.  There are five individuals ranked in Golfstat’s Top 10 and nine in the Top 20.

New Mexico senior Sammi Stevens has an interesting first-round matchup on Monday as she is paired with UNLV’s Dana Finkelstein.  Stevens and Finkelstein, a junior, have been standout Mountain West golfers since their freshmen seasons and both have been named MW Golfers of the Week this spring season.

It’s a challenging matchup for New Mexico and UNLV as teams, too.   The Lobo and Rebel golfers have been packaged in a threesome with the Texas Longhorns.  This is a snapshot look at two of the teams expected to be battling for the 2014 Mountain West title along with San Diego State.

The Aztecs will have a challenging test, too.  They have paired their golfers with USC and UCLA on Monday going off the No. 1 tee box.

Lobo senior Sofia Hoglund tees off at 8 a.m., (PT) Monday with Rebel Avery French, UNM freshman Katerina Jaeger goes off at 8:09 a.m., with Rebel Marguerite Swearinge, freshman Manon Molle has an 8:18 a.m., tee time with Rebel Demi Mak, and senior Manon De Roey has an 8:27 a.m., start with Rebel Mayko Chwen Wang.

UNM’s Eva Saulnier is playing as an individual in the 54-hole tournament. Stevens and Finkelstein tee off at 8:36 a.m.

The three-day tournament will be played at around 6,200 yards on the par-72 Farms Golf Club located in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., which is North of San Diego and about 15 miles Northeast of La Jolla.  It’s a beautiful spot to play golf.

But this also is a thorny field.

USC and UCLA are throwing out spectacular seasons, The Trojans are coming off a win in UCLA’s Bruin Wave Invitational on March 3-4.  USC used a 277 team score on the second round to finish 1-under for the 54-hole tournament.   The Trojans had three golfers finish the event under par with Kyung Kim getting the win.

UCLA was third at 22-over par.  It was a convincing win by USC. UNLV’s Finkelstein finished tied for tenth with a 5-over card.  SDSU’s Emma Henrikson finished tied for the 16th spot.

There are other solid golf teams down the line at the Farms. Arizona State will carry a No. 6 ranking into the tournament followed by No. 13 Stanford , No. 14 Oklahoma State, No. 21 Oregon and No. 26 Miami.

The Aztecs are the top ranked team in the Mountain West at 45 with UNLV in the No. 50 spot and New Mexico at 71.   California also is a Top 50 team coming in ranked No. 36.  UNLV beat SDSU by a single stroke at the UCLA tourney.

A team’s score will be formed from the top four scores each day off a five-player team.  Amy Alcott, the LPGA Rookie of the Year in 1975 and winner of 33 Tour events, will speak to the golfers during the tournament.

“Amy is one of the true characters of women's golf, and has incredible stories,” said SDSU Coach Leslie Spalding.  “Having spent time with Amy, I can assure you that she will be most entertaining. Her perspective will have an impact on the players and we can’t wait to have her at The Farms.”

USC’s Alison Lee is the top ranked golfers in the field at No. 2 with a 70.68 (adjusted) scoring average.  UCLA’s Kyung Kim is No. 3 at 71.32. UNLV’s Finkelstein is the top ranked MW golfer in the field at No. 17.  She has a 71.73 (adjusted) average.  SDSU’s Sirene Blair is No. 61 and UNM’s Stevens is No. 69 on the Golfstat list.

Those scores show you the value of a missed putt or a made putt. Stevens is about two shots off Lee’s scoring average.   Stevens captured her first career tournament victory at the Juli Inkster Spartan Invitational played March 3-4 in San Jose, Calif.  Finkelstein has two wins this season.

The scores posted by the Lobos, Rebels and San Diego State also will provide an interesting glance into the individual battles at the MW Championships.   Stevens, Finkelstein and Blair are the three recipients of all the MW Player of the Week or Month honors so far this season. They have the top three scoring averages in the MW and are playing over the same 54 holes.

However, last year Lobo Manon De Roey grabbed the MW title. The UNM senior takes a 74.85 average to the Farms tourney.
