Junior Sammi Stevens placed third at the Fresno State Lexus Classic, equaling her best finish as a Lobo. Stevens ended the tournament at 4-over 218 (73-69-76), tying for the second-lowest 54-hole total of her career.
As a team, the Lobos finished ninth in the 15-team field with a 54-hole total of 53-over 917 (312-301-304). Long Beach State (892) nipped Tulsa (893) by one stroke to win the team title.
Stevens began the final round at the Copper River Country Club (par 72, 6,212 yards) just one shot out of the lead, but she finished seven strokes behind eventual winner Simone Hoey (211) from Long Beach State.
Stevens has been the Lobos' top player in seven straight tournaments. Her stroke average of 74.62 is tops on the team and ranks No. 2 among Mountain West golfers.
UNM junior Manon De Roey posted the Lobos' low round of the day, a 1-over 73. She tied for 18th at 10-over 226 (75-78-73).
One of the pleasant surprises of the day was the play of freshman Ira Knopf. Entering the tournament with a season scoring average of 85.57, Knopf shot a season-best 76. She finished 74th at 246 (86-84-76).
The Lobos' next competition is the Mountain West Championships April 25-27 at Rancho Mirage, Calif.
