College Football Performance Award weekly honors

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – University of New Mexico punter Ben Skaer on Monday earned a College Football Performance Awards National Punter of the Week  honorable mention for his performance Saturday during the Lobos’ 38-31 loss to Wyoming.

Skaer, a senior from Waterloo, Ill., punted five times for an average of 51.2 yards vs. the Cowboys. He had a net average of 46.2 yards per attempt. Three of his punts traveled more than 50 yards and three landed inside the Wyoming 20. The Lobos recovered a fumble on one of those that led to Jhurell Pressley’s eight-yard touchdown run on the next play.

The Lobos are No. 2 in the nation in net punting with an average of 43.6 yards per punt. Skaer’s average of 46.7 yards per punt would rank sixth in the country, but he is one punt shy of the minimum number of punts needed to qualify in the national rankings.

Eight of Skaer’s 21 punts in 2013 have gone for 50 yards or more, and eight have landed inside the opponents’ 20-yard line.

The honorable mention was the second for Skaer this season – he also earned one in the season opener against UTSA – and his fifth in the last two seasons.
