ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --- The 2014 Lobo Football Women’s Clinic, driven by your New Mexico Chevy Dealers, was a hit as nearly 200 female Lobo fans got a chance to meet the coaches and players, tour UNM’s facilities, and run through drills on Branch Field at University Stadium.
Proceeds from the Lobo Football Women’s Clinic go to benefit the “Send-A-Kid” program, which helps send underprivileged youths to UNM football games.
The clinic, which is a long-standing tradition that has continued under head coach Bob Davie, featured several members of the 2014 team assisting in the facility tours and in the drills. The sesssion started with 45 minutes worth of tours and chalk-talk that included a crash course on football terminology and the X's and O's of the game. The participants then broke up into six groups and rotated among the various stations on Branch Field, where they learned anything from throwing technique to blocking. There might even have been an end zone celebration practice session or two.
Along with Coach Davie, who addressed the participants right at 6:15, the keynote speaker for the Lobo Football Women’s Clinic was former Lobo kicker Katie Hnida, who in 2003 became the first (and still only) female to score in a Division I football game when she kicked a pair of extra points in a win over Texas State.
“I love coming back to the University of New Mexico, it’s really my second home,” said Hnida, who now resides in Boston. “It’s exciting for me to see all of these women interested and excited about Lobo football, and it’s great to come back and be a part of it.”
The clinic served as a final summer clinic for the team, as the Lobos have held numerous youth camps throughout the summer, along with an elite prospect and 7-on-7 camp. The staff also worked at satellite camps in Texas that were hosted by Division III power Mary Hardin-Baylor, giving the staff a full summer. All of that leads to the start of fall camp onThursday. That is the first official day in preparation for the season opener on Aug. 30 as the Lobos host UTEP at 6 p.m. on Branch Field at University Stadium.
