ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - University of New Mexico senior center Dillon Farrell has been named to the 2013 Rimington Award preseason watch list. The award goes annually to the best center in college football.
Farrell, a 2012 honorable-mention All-Mountain West selection, is one of 44 players on the preseason list. Farrell is a two-year starter at center, with one year spent as a starting right tackle in-between.
The native from Baton Rouge, La., anchored a line that helped UNM average 301.3 rushing yards per game in 2012, which was fifth-best in the nation, and led the Lobos to a school-record 10 300-yard rushing days.
Behind the offensive line's protection, running back Kasey Carrier rushed for a single-season school record 1,469 yards last season.
The 6-5, 292-pound Farrell was voted a 2013 team captain in the spring and graduated in May with a degree in University Studies.
Farrell and the Lobos will open the '13 season on Aug. 31 against Texas-San Antonio on Branch Field at University Stadium at 6 p.m.
