ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- University of New Mexico football coach Bob Davie has announced the hiring of Apollo Wright as running backs coach.

Wright spent the last six seasons at Florida International – the last three as running backs coach. In 2011, FIU running back Kedrick Rhodes set a school record with 1,149 rushing yards under Wright’s tutelage.

Wright also coached special teams and cornerbacks at FIU. In his previous stop at Villanova, Wright coached future NFL All-Pro Brian Westbrook, who had 1,603 rushing yards and 22 touchdowns in becoming the Division I-AA National Player of the Year in 2001.

“Coach Wright brings a wealth of experience in working with running backs to our football program,” Davie said. “Throughout his career, he has consistently produced very talented and productive players.  He will be a great leader and mentor for our running backs on the field, in the classroom and in the community, and we’re excited to have him on our staff.”

The UNM staff now is complete, with the hiring of former Nevada assistant Scott Baumgartner as wide receivers coach earlier this month.

“Coach Baumgartner will be a tremendous addition to our staff,” Davie said. “I have always thought highly of Nevada’s program and what they have been able to accomplish there and Scott was obviously a huge part of that success. His work ethic, organization and knowledge of our offensive scheme make him a true asset to our football team.”
