ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - A good crowd was on hand Sunday evening at the UNM Soccer Complex to watch the women's soccer team's first intrasquad scrimmage of the season. A close first half preceded three second-half goals by Cherry as it pulled away late for a 3-0 victory.

Head coach Kit Vela was pleased both by what she saw on the pitch and in the stands.

"We had a great little crowd from Albuquerque United," she said. "We informally opened it up to their club. It was probably the most competitive Cherry-Silver we've ever had. We're 27 or 28 players deep right now, and we've got some youth in there as well. And they're going to have to find their way, but it's a really excited group.

"Offensively I think we showed a lot. We have more maturity than we had last year, and with our newcomers I think it's going to be pretty spectacular. We're scoring goals and we hit a lot of posts too. I think it's going to be excited to watch us. Defensively we're young but we're fun. They're getting it. It's going to be a good group."

Dylann O'Connor opened the scoring for Cherry. She took a nice pass from Ruth Bruciaga and placed a shot perfectly into the upper left corner of the net. Bruciaga then scored the next two goals, one off a missed clearance and another off a rebound.

Silver had a great chance to get on the board in the final minute. A nice little give-and-go created space for Claire Lynch, but Cassie Ulrich made a fine save to keep her clean sheet.

At the final horn the team mingled with the crowd that remained throughout, despite threatening rain clouds hanging overhead.

"If we can get this kind of crowd out for a Cherry-Silver match then I look forward to the crowds we're going to have this year," Vela said.
