In Tucson, Ariz., after more than a week of training to get ready for the 2014 season, the University of New Mexico women’s soccer team finally had the chance to get on the field with someone other than itself Saturday night.
The Lobos’ exhibition with the Arizona Wildcats provided an extra unintended benefit that could help the young UNM squad down the road as well.
So while Arizona got the 3-0 victory in front of 712 fans at Mulcahy Stadium, both sides were forced to endure a weather delay that lasted more than an hour. The delay came midway through the first of three 30-minute periods.
The Lobos were able to weather that initial storm, so to speak, but the Wildcats struck twice just minutes into the second period to gain the advantage. The home team added a late goal in the game that finished after 11 p.m. Mountain Time.
Both sides were trying several combinations of players to determine lineups that will be effective during the regular season. The Lobos used 24 players that gained valuable experience in preparation for the team’s season opener on Friday at Texas Tech, the No. 17 team in the NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division I Preseason Poll.
Redshirt freshman defender Emily Chavez got the start, and four other redshirt freshmen and six true freshman earned playing time in the exhibition.
UNM’s non-conference schedule also includes September games against No. 15 Marquette and No. 8 Florida. The latter takes place at the Lobo Soccer Complex on Sept. 14.
New Mexico’s 2014 home opener is set for Sept. 12 against Loyola-Chicago at 7 p.m.
