Colorado Springs, Colo. --- When you go 6-1-0 in your last seven matches, the honors come your way. Such is the case for New Mexico, as Liz Nare was honored as the Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week for the second straight week. It also marked the third time in the last four weeks that a Lobo has been honored by the conference.
Jordan Craig was named Offensive Player of the Week on September 3. San Diego State's Megan Jurado was the MW's Offensive Player of the Week, the second time in three weeks that she earned the award.
Hailing from Lake Forest, Calif., Nare anchored the New Mexico defense, again, as the Lobos recorded two shutouts on the week. In a 1-0 win at UC Riverside, UNM allowed just five shots, none on goal, against a team that had been averaging 13.0 shots per game. Against UC Davis, the Lobos allowed just 11 shots, five on goal, to a team averaging 1.50 goals per game. Nare recorded an assist in the 2-0 win over the Aggies on the first goal of the game by Stephanie Rowe.
Nare had not recorded an offensive point in either of her first two seasons, but she has a goal and three assists this year. Her lone goal was the equalizer in a 1-1 tie with TCU to open the season, and her three assists have all come on game-winning goals, including two in overtime.
The Lobos, who are riding a 10-match unbeaten streak at home and a 14-match unbeaten streak in conference play, will open conference play on Friday night at 6 p.m. against Boise State at the UNM Soccer Complex. It will be "Stuff the Stadium" night, with all tickets just $2.
